What Happens When You Set an Alias Destination to null in ImprovMX?

Learn what happens when you set an alias destination to null in ImprovMX. Silently accept emails without forwarding or bouncebacks — perfect for retired or spam-targeted addresses.

Sometimes, you may want to stop emails from being forwarded, but without generating bouncebacks or notifying the sender. That’s where setting an alias destination to null comes in.

What does null do?

In ImprovMX, if you set the destination of an alias to null, we will accept the email silently, but it will not be delivered anywhere. The message is discarded after being received — no forwarding, no bounce, no error.

This can be useful in several scenarios:

  • You're getting spam to a particular alias and want to drop it silently.
  • You want to stop forwarding while you reconfigure your real destination but don’t want to reject mail in the meantime.

How to set an alias to null

  1. Go to your Alias settings in the dashboard.
  2. Find the alias you’d like to modify, or create a new one.
  3. In the Destination field, enter the word null.

In this example, emails sent to new-alias@yourdomain.com will now be silently accepted and discarded.

Note: This is different from removing an alias. When you remove an alias entirely, we reject the email. When you set the destination to null, we accept it — but don’t deliver it.
